Yay, you let go of an old habit! Now, let’s start a new habit.
You can listen to Fearless 5 Podcast #29 here on Anchor. Now onto the podcast show notes:
Close your eyes.
Take a deep breathe. Know you are safe to tread some new ground. Know you are worthy of a new habit of your choosing.
What habit do you want to have?
Maybe it’s going to the gym every day before or after work. Maybe it’s putting your laundry away after you do it. Maybe you want to spend more time reading or writing. Maybe you want to use an app to learn a new language. Whatever it is. Clearly think of a new habit that’s easy to create. It could be drinking water first thing when you wake up before you drink coffee.
Make sure it’s a new habit you can start TODAY. Not something you have to go buy anything for, not something that requires a trip to a certain store or other red tape…
Now keep breathing in and out. Picture yourself experiencing this new habit. What does it look like? How does it feel? What is good about this? How does it add to your life? Think of all the bonuses this new habit brings to your life. It makes you feel so good, doesn’t it?
Breathe in that good feeling.
Feel pride in yourself for experiencing this new habit.
Commit to doing this new habit once a day, or a week, or month, or whatever you want it to be.
Tell yourself, “I can totally do this…. I can do it well…. I can do it often…. When I do this, I feel…..
Happy. Proud. Content.
I know I can create this new habit because I love myself in this way and I am worth it.
I see the benefits of creating this new habit. It is something I really like and value about myself.
Think of the reasons behind your WHY… Why do you want this new habit? What is your motivation?
Then every time you resist and want to backslide, come back to your WHY. Remind yourself only WHY you want this new habit in. Your life. Don’t beat yourself up if you miss a day or week. Don’t stay in negative thoughts if you mess it up. Don’t listen to anyone hassle you about it — especially if it’s a new, healthy habit. People love to pull you back to their misery when they can’t, won’t or don’t want to change — so they will give you crap about it. Don’t hear them.
Remember, you are worthy of change. You are worthy of new things. You know who you are and you are worthy. This is for YOU not them.
You can do this. If you slip, you don’t give up. You don’t give yourself crap about it. You just try again. You matter. Your habits matter and you are worthy of good habits.
Keep going. Fill out a habit tracker if you have one or make one if that motivates you.
Feel the joy of having created something new in your life. Know you can do it again and again.
